Could variety be key?

Could variety be key or is there a common theme?

Over the past few months as I have been seeking that new permanent part time opportunity that assists our family goals, I have had many interviews and sent in numerous applications.

Navigating the resume and being past ‘middle age’, the conundrum of adding all your employment on the resume (thus adding multiple pages) has arisen. Some have been shortened based on the application process and some are the full gamut.

In one interview the comment was made how ‘varied’ my employment history is. Now I admit that is somewhat true as you go from Marketing Coordinator to External Blinds Sales Agent, Disability Employment Consultant to Tupperware Executive and most recently Events Specialist.

I could look at this with a traditional lense that most of these roles don’t go past 3 years and I swap and change industries and roles too often. OR anyone who is looking through the long resume could come to the same assessment as I do, that there is a common theme amongst the variety - Service. Ongoing relationship building. Connecting with a wide variety of stakeholders. Leading and excelling at whatever role I am in at the time.

That looks like the capability and capacity to adapt with a consistent theme of service to me. Whilst I haven’t loved all my roles throughout my career (tell me someone who has), I’ve given them my best and come out successful in the end.

One key component to success in life (we know this can always be debated), is the ability to come to the realisation that work takes up too many years of the average person’s life to hate what you are paid to do.

Why stay stuck? Why not enjoy the work you do and have the flexibility to live the one life we are given?

Does this mean a ‘varied’ employment history is a bad thing?

Does the ability to create those ongoing relationships where you have left a lasting positive impression, override the negative connotation of the variety of industry and roles on your resume?

Maybe the variety and relatability are an asset that adds value making the best of any situation for the organisation and myself?

I’m going to go with that as I begin yet another role I haven’t done before but aim to provide the highest level of service, create ongoing relationships and be a successful part of the team.
